Eagle View Elementary School is a gem nestled within a ring of tall evergreen and alder trees. Bald eagles nest in nearby trees and can often be seen soaring overhead. The school is located adjacent to the Little Tsulquate River at the end of Seaview Drive in Port Hardy, BC. Local amenities, such as the tennis courts, swimming pool, arena, civic center, fire hall, one of the daycares and police station are within a very short walking distance.
Eagle View Elementary school enrolls students from Kindergarten to Grade 7. The first bell rings at 8:55 a.m. and our day ends at 3:03 p.m. This year, the lunch break is from 12:00 – 12:55 p.m.
Our History
Did you know that Eagle View Elementary School (EVES) was originally a Junior High School?
The school was first opened in 1971 and named Port Hardy Junior Secondary School (P.H.J.S.S.). The documentary video below about the history of our school was researched and created by five Grade 6 & 7 students: Olivia H., Maya W., Elise Q., Emma J. and Morgan P.
A few current staff members remember attending school during grades 8 – 10 and recall running hurdles down the intermediate hall and landing high jump into the E.S.L. room (which is now the Learning Commons/Library). There wasn’t a gymnasium in those days!
As Port Hardy’s population expanded, in 1975 ten school portables were moved to the beach area across from Kinsman Park. Mr. W. Manke became the principal of Port Hardy Elementary School.
In 1976 the new Port Hardy Secondary School opened and the previous P.H.J.S.S. became the second elementary school in the Port Hardy area. A contest was held to determine a name for this new elementary school. As 20 bald eagles were counted circling overhead and sitting in nearby trees one day, the name Eagle View Elementary School was suggested and selected. The Chairman of the School Board at this time was named Eve Smith and it did not take long to convince her that the new name was the perfect name for the new school.
Initially, there were 160 students registered, but by 1980 EVES had grown to 320 students.
In 1992 there was a major renovation and 70% of the school was remodeled or expanded. Four new classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a kitchen, a computer lab and a lovely new library were added. Further funding from the Ministry of Education provided major seismic upgrading to ensure EVES became earthquake safe.
During the summer of 2010 the school received upgrading in preparation for the amalgamation of Robert Scott Elementary School with Eagle View Elementary School. In September 2010, the school population doubled to just over 300 students once again.
Current enrollment at Eagle View is approximately 200 students.
